Alexandria
Location:
Located on the Mediterranean Sea North West Delta, 140 miles from Cairo by agricultural road and 137 miles by desert road.
Who built it? And why?
Named after Alexander the Great, it was built at his orders on the site of a small old fishing village called Rhakot is in 322 BC to be the capital of his reign in Egypt, as a port near to his country and a Greek cultural center. Not only was it ancient Egypt Center of knowledge but it also was a tempestuous historical setting that witness the famous relationship of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
Overview:
It is internationally known as the Bride of the Mediterranean with beaches extending along the Mediterranean for some 30 Km.Alexandria was the largest pre-industrial city in the world, with a population that reached somewhat between 500,000 and 1,000,000 before the Industrial Revolution. Now, there are approximate 4.1 million national residing in Alexandria.
Today Alexandria is considered the second capital of Egypt. It is distinguished by its strategic location moderate climate and its beautifully fine sandy beaches which covered a large area between Agamy in the west and Abu Qeir in the east, which made it worthy of its well merited title Pearl of the Mediterranean.
How to reach it?
Alexandria is served by two airports: Al Nozha Airport, located 7km southeast of the city center, and Borg Al Arab Airport which is 25 Km Southwest of Alexandria. Or you can arrive at Cairo International Airport & then transferred by bus or train to Alexandria.
By bus:
There is more than one bus direct from Cairo to Alexandria every day. As well Alexandria reachable from most cities in Egypt either by bus or Train.
By Train:-
There are two railway stations that connected Alexandria to almost all cities in Egypt, and the tram-first used in 1860-is still commonly used within the city.There is a train every three hours that departs from Ramsis station in Cairo (There is one train station from Aswan to Alexandria).
