Saqqara is an immense necropolis (cemetery), used as a burial ground for thousands of years, Saqqara hides its secrets well under desert sands. Despite virtually continuous excavations for some two centuries, much of the area remains to be excavated. The site stretches four miles from north to south and more than 1.2 mile across at its widest point.
The site's best-known feature is the step pyramid , the world's oldest major stone structure. It was built in the 3rd Dynasty (around 2630 BC) for King Djoser and its construction was overseen by his vizier Imhotep.
All over Saqqara can be found tombs of different periods. Those open to the public date to the Old Kingdom . Around the northern-most of Saqqara's pyramids is that of the 6th Dynasty pharaoh Teti . Adjacent to the pyramid are the mastabas (free-standing tombs of earlier periods) of his officials, some of whom had marvelous reliefs.
One of Saqqara's most famous archaeological sites is the Serapeum which was discovered by Auguste Mariette in 1851. Its rock cut corridors and burial chambers were excavated for the Apis bulls which were sacred to god Ptah. The corridors form a virtual underground extending for hundreds of feet.Twenty chambers still contain sarcophagi.
Location:
31 miles from the pyramids of Giza.
Who built it?
It was built by Snefru, Father of Cheops. Snefru is the founder of the 4th dynasty and he was not the heir to the throne but he got the kingdom through his marriage to the Queen Hetepheres, the daughter of king
Huni who was the last king in the third dynasty.
Why was it built ?
The Bent Pyramid was built as the ancient Egyptians believe in resurrection. Snefru was buried in this pyramid according to the ancient Egyptian concept of life after death. Explanation: This pyramid is famous for its casing which is the best in all the pyramids of Egypt. Its original height is 336 feet and the pyramid itself has two separate entrances. Mysteriously, this pyramid started at one angle (approx. 52 degrees) and then suddenly changes to a more gradual angle of 43 degrees. This odd arrangement provides this pyramid with a distinctive and unique appearance.
There are several possible reasons for this change in angle. Currently, the most widely accepted theory is that King Sneferu realized that if he were to continue the pyramid at its initial angle, it would rise to a height which would require a tremendous amount of material and labor. Another theory holds that the original angle resulted in displacement of many blocks and cracking of the blocks that lined the chambers and passageways.
