Valley of Kings

The valley of kings is one of the most archeological sites in Egypt its located on the west back of the River Nile at luxor.Its the burial place of the pharaohs from the New Kingdom, kings from the new Kingdome chose the valley of kings instead of pyramids to save their tombs against robbers.The valley of kings has around 65 tombs, most of these tombs has the same design; three corridors, an antechamber and the sarcophagus chamber.Due to their design these burial chambers were harder to rob and were more easily hidden unlike pyramids.

 

The most important tombs in the valley of kings:

 

The tomb of Ramesses IV:
Three corridors descending to the sarcophagus room.The chamber’s ceilings represent the goddess “Nut”. The top of the pink granite sarcophagus is decorated with goddesses Isis and Nephthys, to guard the body.

The tomb of Ramesses IX :
Stairs leading down to the tomb door that is decorated with the Pharaoh worshipping the sun with goddesses Isis and Nephthys behind him. The tomb consists of, three corridors lead into an antechamber which leads to a pillared hall, then a passage that leads to the sarcophagus room.

The tomb of Merneptah :
The entrance is decorated with Isis and Nephthys worshipping the sun.The granite top of the sarcophagus is in the antechamber, and the inner sarcophagus is down stairs in the pillared hall. The pink granite top is decorated with the Merneptah as Osiris.

The tomb of Ramesses V :
This tomb was Originally built for Ramesses V, it has three chambers and a pillared chamber that was added by Ramesses VI with scenes of the sky goddess, Nut.

 

The tomb of Ramesses III:
This tomb is known as the "Harpers Tomb" because of the two harpers playing to the gods in four of the tomb’s chambers. Ten small rooms branch off of the main corridors, these chambers were maid for the placement of the tomb furniture.

The tomb of Seti I :
The longest tomb in the valley of kings, around 100m, it still contains relieves in all the chambers and also in its side rooms.One of the back chambers is decorated with the Ritual of the Opening Mouth, a traditional Ritual in tombs, which represent that the deceased is eating and drinking organs, referring to the afterlife.The sarcophagus is now in a Museum, in London.

The tomb of Tuthmosis III:
Not a traditional tomb first an ascent up on wooden stairs, crossing over a hole in the ground, and then a descent down into the tomb. That hole in the ground was probably maid prevent robberies.The tomb consists of two small chambers, decorated with stars, and a large vestibule, before the sarcophagus chamber, which is rounded and painted with only two colors red and black.

The tomb of Amenhotep II :
In this Tomb, a flight of stairs leading to a long corridor, off to the sarcophagus chamber. The mummies of, Tuthmosis IV, Amenhotep II and Seti II, were found in one of the side rooms and nine mummies were found in another room.

The tomb of Horemheb :
This tomb's construction is just like the tomb of Seti I's with some difference in its decorations..
